We holed ourselves up in a yoga studio in rural Nova Scotia for nine days where I set up a recording studio. By the ocean, gray and gloomy, sifting through grief journals; trying our best to make sense of Loss. Personal loss. Universal loss. We all lose someone or some thing. Maybe loss isn't the word, because they're never really gone. Ironically, I felt lost starting this process. I went into this without preparing a single note or concept. Maureen encouraged me that whatever it will be, will be and that's all that matters. Trying to ignore doubt, expectations and just "trust the process".
*gulp*
On Day 1 (a rare sunny morning); I quickly realized that the room wasn't quite ideal in terms of soundproofing. Distant lawn mowers and chainsaws. When that chilled out, I sat down to try to find some themes/motifs on piano and noticed sparrows were singing in the same key. Coincidence? Cliche? Don't care. Stuck a mic out the window and bam- there's the first piece written (the last track on the album). We immediately felt validated in our choices of how to make this composition. Clearly we were being guided - kind of like a lighthouse. More and more, nature wanted to be a part of this. So we welcomed it in. Waves, wind, birds, distant bells...all parts of nature that seem to directly correspond with the grieving process. It's cyclical. Dynamic. It never really ends. Just our relationship to it changes. A light always brings us back.

My heart went through a lot when we made this album. But in the end it was full. And I'm so glad people deeply resonate with it. And I'm even more proud that it won an ECMA for Classical Album of the Year and Classical Composer of the Year.
